Part 1A Chapter by Burr the Story SorceressIt was all my own fault. I had to go hiking. I had to leave the trail. I had to have an adventure. It was me, me, me, all about me. It was all my fault. Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself. This is the first time I've ever written in a dairy, so I'm new at this. Where should I start? My name is Rose Sunshine Greenwood. My parents were hippies, which accounts for the odd name. We lived in a very colorful van until I was eight and then Dad decided to make my life easier with the kids at school and moved into a small house in the country. I love hiking, it is by far my favorite thing to do besides singing. Yesterday was my eighteenth birthday. Mom and Dad surprised me with a trip to the mountains that I could see on the horizon. I was super excited and couldn't wait to get going. I was packed and ready three days before it was time to go. Yesterday, my birthday, we went hiking. There is a trail in the mountains for hikers like us, but I wanted an adventure. I begged and pleaded to go off the trail. I had a map and compass. I told them I could find the way to anywhere with a map and compass. They caved in under twenty minutes. It was my birthday and I was their only child, their little angel and I never asked for anything I didn't really need. They could never resist when I really wanted something. It was a few hours untill dark when we decided to turn back. Mum wanted to try to figure out which way the lodge was, so she had the map and compass. It was really hard for her, she had a really bad sense of direction. She leaned against a tree. I was studying some wild flowers a few yards away, trying to guess what kind they were, my back to my parents. Da was between us, looking at the sky. I heard a snap and a scream. I spin without standing, ending on one knee. Da was in motion, too, running toward Mum. The tree she was leaning against had snapped and if had been growing on the edge of a steep, high cliff. I was frozen to the spot as I watched Dad grab Mom. Both of them went over the edge. I was finally able to move. I move carefully. I don't want to fall over the edge, too. I use my rope to myself to a tree well away from the cliff edge. Once I am securely tied, I lean over he edge and look down. The drop is around hundred yards and bare of greenery. There is no way someone could survive a fall from that high. I scan the bottom until I find what I was looking for. There,at the bottom of the huge cliff, were two bodies that didn't move at all. My parents were dead. I think I may still be in shock. As I write this, my breathing gets worse and my heart pumps faster. It hurts to breath, but that is all I feel. You'd think losing your parents would be the worst thing to happen to you. My day, however, got worse. Mum had had my map and compass when she fell. Without them, I couldn't find my way back to the lodge to get help. I was alone, in the mountains, and the light was fading fast. I decided to go up. Higher ground would make it easier to see smoke coming from any houses, if there were any. Smoke means people and people means help. I went as far as I could before the light totally left. I climbed a high tree to look around, hoping to find something before the sun set. I did. Higher up and to my left was a trail of smoke. I stay in the tree until the moon rises. It is almost full, so it's light is just as good as sunlight and flashlight beams. I head of in the direction of the smoke. It was a long walk and it was dark, even with the moonlight. I climbed trees even now and then to make sure I was still on track. The moon was starting to sink in the sky when I reached the house. The house was large. Black with dark green shutters and doors, it was three stories high and looked very, very old. Smoke still rose from the chimney and lights come out of several uncovered windows. A large, bronze knocker shaped like a wolf head with a crescent moon in it's mouth is on the front door. Normally,I would have been nervous about knocking on that door, or any door. I am shy around people I don't know. But I couldn't be shy. I was shivering from the cold that had seeped through my heavy coat and jeans and I was lost. I grabbed the large end of the moon knocker and bang on the door. I don't know what happened next. I think I blacked out after I banged knocker. Everything after that is hazy and fuzzy. I know that someone had brought me inside the house and put me in this room. They also took off my pack, coat, sweater, and boots, because I woke up an hour ago in just my T-shirt and jeans. That person had also locked the door. My room is very red. Everything in it is red or some shade of red. The wood in the room are the only things not some kind of red. I think it is all oak. From the room's only window,I know I am in the third story and the trees start again several yards away. The sun is sinking in the sky. My pack had been left with me. I am now writing on the dairy my Mum had given my last year for my birthday. I haven't used it until now. I don't know what made me put it in my bag, but I am glad I did. I don't know where I am, but I am alive and safe. I can live with that. Who ever owns this house will come to see me soon, I think. I can wait until then. For now I am safe and alive and I will deal with what comes next when it comes. © 2008 Burr the Story SorceressAuthor's Note
