Part 11A Chapter by Burr the Story SorceressWorrin took me back to my room just before dawn. When we reached my door he stopped and turned to face me. “I've a surprise for you, my darling,” he said with a smile. I was baffled. “A surprise?” He nodded and let me enter the room before him. At first I didn't see anything different. It wasn't until Worrin closed the door behind him that my large, furry surprise bounded up to me and would have knocked me over if Worrin hadn't been behind me. I squealed in delight and dropped to my knees. Before me stood my dog, Snowfur, a huge Alaskan Eskimo. Standing on all fours he came to my elbow and on two legs he would be as tall as Worrin. I warped my arms around his fluffy neck and buried my face in his soft white fur. Worrin knelt beside me pet the dog's neck. “He was very worried about you. He had almost knocked your neighbor's front door clean off it's hinges. I could get your cats to come, however. They didn't like the idea of coming to the mountains.” 'Who needs them when you can have me?' the proud dog asked. He gently licked my arm. 'A dog like me is worth five cats. With Worrin you have two wonderful dogs that equal ten cats!' “Yes, oh course I do! You two are much better!” I laughed. I looked up at Worrin and saw him beaming. “What?” “You can hear him,” Worrin said simply. “Can you hear other animals, too?” I shrugged. “Not as clearly as Snowfur, but yea, I can. My cats I could hear as clearly as Snowfur, though.” Worrin's smile widened. “Sometime soon I wish to test if you can speak to a werewolf in his wolf skin.” “That sounds great as long as that werewolf is you.” I smiled and felt my eyes water. “You went to town today to get my pets, didn't you?” Worrin nodded. “That was the only condition you gave me, love. You said you would stay here with me if your pets were allowed to stay. I went and got them for you. Well, him.” I released my hold on Snowfur and flung myself into Worrin's chest. He was so surprised that we toppled over and I was sprawled over him. I heard a solid thud when his back hit the floor. I ignored it and hid my face against his throat as the tears flowed freely. Worrin wrapped his arms around me and let me cry. It was a strange thing, crying. Never before had I cried when I didn't have some kind of physical injury. Never before had I been so out of my depth, either. Normal people didn't deal with werewolves and magical breding and such. I almost missed being normal. I heard the door close and I looked up. Snowfur was gone. “He said he'd wait for me to leave,” Worrin told me. “He is leaving the comforting to me.” I smiled and sniffled. I started to get up, but his arms tightened around me. It was then that I realized that I was laying between his legs, my head fitting neatly under his chin. He rolled until I was under him. He rose a bit so that his body close, but not touching mine. My eyes were caught by his. “I'm worried, love,” he confessed softly. “Magic Wielders are an unruly bunch. They say one thing and do another. What they want, they get, and they aren't afraid to kill if it'll help them get their goal. I know they'll come for you. Never would they let such a prize as you get away.” He closed his eyes as if he were in pain. “I don't know if my family will help protect you. I am strong, but I can't keep you from them for long on my own.” I framed his face with my hands. “Aunt Liz will help. Sofia said she got my mother out of the breding house all by herself, right? She won't let them take me.” He laughed and opened his eyes. “You got me there. Adelliza is about as controllable as Armageddon.” We laughed and stood. Worrin gave me one last hug and kiss before leaving. Snowfur strolled in as he left. 'You two are cute as puppies,' he said with satisfaction. 'I couldn't have picked a better mate myself.' I laughed. “You wouldn't have been allowed to pick anything for me. I only let you give opinions.” 'If that's what you have to tell yourself.' He jumped onto the bed and flopped down. 'You two haven't done anything disgusting on this bed, have you? I don't think I could sleep where humans have done such things. You lot are just strange with those lotions and that rubber stuff.' I blushed furiously and would have yelled at him if I could find enough breath. All I managed to say was incoherent and gibberish. The large white dog sniffed at the bed wile I tried to remember how to breath right. 'Never mind. I don't smell anything.' I grabbed one of my pillows and hit him with it a few times. “That is just horrible! What Worrin and I do is none of your business!” 'I'm rather disappointed,' he confessed. The dog seemed oblivious to my attack. 'I thought he would have done something by now, at least. Maybe it wasn't in here. I should check his room.' I hit him as hard as I could. “I am so glad I didn't have dates to bring home! You probably would have asked if we had 'done anything disgusting' on the way home from whatever!” 'Someone has to ask,' he said with what must have been a dog version of a shrug. 'I very much doubt Marcee would dare. Same with Sofia and Yanna. That leaves me.' “This reminds of when I started high school. You followed me to school and strolled into class and asked if I had decked someone yet.” I laughed. “The look on Mrs. Trigman's face when you growled at her was priceless. Too bad she couldn't understand you. She would have fainted if she heard a dog lecture her on manners.” 'She was a rude, impolite human.' He licked my hand gently. 'She was yelling at you because you would not sit when there was no where where you could sit. And don't mention the empty seat by the girls with blond, curly hair. They were about as nice as the teacher was.' I smiled and sat by my overly large dog. I ran my fingers through his thick fur and sighed. “Oh, Snow, what am I going to do? What if those magic people come to take me from Worrin and marry me to someone else? I don't want to leave.” 'Don't worry, Rose. Worrin won't let that happen and neither will Adelliza and I. You are not going anywhere you don't want to go.' I hugged Snowfur tightly. “I hope so. I really, truly hope so.” © 2008 Burr the Story SorceressAuthor's Note
