11) CallA Chapter by Burr the Story SorceressTwo things happen at the same time to hold off anymore questions about my family ties. Two men entered the room, one pale and one dark. The pale man, who looks strangely familiar to me, looks angrily at Carmen as the other newcomer stands besides her. Before anyone in the large room can say anything a loud wailing buzz fills the air.
“Oh!” I exclaim as I look over to my robe draped across the top of the dresser. I start to careful crawl toward the edge of the nest-bed as I explain, “That is Cleo calling on one of those clever mirror transmitters. I was supposed to meet her and John at Verona Island.”
A hand gently grabs my shoulder and pushes me back into the pillows. I look up into the pale, familiar man's dark eyes as the buzzing continues. “You shouldn't be moving around so much,” he says softly. “You might reopen your wounds. Ed, could you get that?”
“It's in my right inner pocket,” I instruct, forcing my gaze from the man's as a light blush steals across my cheeks. He easing back to stand on the other side of my bed from the Dersoni. Edward pulls out the palm-sized, silver-edged mirror. A sharp and annoyed female voice immediately starts talking.
“Why are you-Edward? Is that you? For real? Where is my dear Mir?” my cousin asks rapidly.
“Is Mir okay?” asks a male voice from the mirror, Johnathan.
“Don't worry, kiddies,” the Dersonus reassures. “Mirrina is just fine. Here she is.”
I take the mirror from him and smile at the two faces peering up at me. One is delicate and golden tanned with long, straight, fire red hair and eyes as crystal blue as the waters around her home. The other is thinner and masculine with golden brown eyes and short, curly blond hair. Their eyes are filled with concern.
“Mir, what are you doing hanging with Uncle Eddie?” Cleo asks. “You don't know Eddie.”
John grabs the mirror from his sister, leaning closer. “Why are there bandages on your neck? Are you okay?”
“WHAT!? MY COUISN IS HURT?!” Cleo screams in the background. Several surprised and panicked cries come from behind the pair and John turns to his sister.
“Stop catching things on fire! Mom is gonna kill you!” John snaps.
“Guys!” I yell into the mirror. I take a breath to yell louder, but the effort is too much for my neck to take. Sering pain shoots through me forcing me to gasp and my eyes to water. All my strength leaves me and the mirror drops to my lap as I struggle to pull air into my lungs through the burning pain. Arms wrap around my waist and I am pulled back against something warm and firm.
“Mirina!” John and Cleo say as the each struggle to see something. Edward grabs the mirror and he leads Clairkitdra and Dark out onto the balcony. I hear another door close and know I am alone in the large room with whoever was holding me.
“Shh, little one, shh,” coos the man holding me. Soft feathers brush my arms as his wings wrap around me, enclosing me in a soothing scent I know so well. “You're safe here, little red hair. Breath with me, slow and steady. It won't hurt forever, little dear. Shh, you are safe with me.”
Mirina remembered these words, that soft voice, that scent. It had been so long ago and she had been so young, but she knew the man who held her. She had known the boy he had been. She opened her eyes and found his face close to hers, their noses touching. She looked into those familiar black eyes and knew she had found him at last.
