Drummer Boy

Drummer Boy

A Poem by Cas Miller

Drummer Boy

Drummer boy, marching

Smiles and waves

What happy campers praise him

Still, there are those who mock

And when tears overcome him

It’s only from the trills of his own mind

Marching with him to his beat

Along the tracks, and lost again

The weekend’s almost over

Still, it feels like Wednesday

Him and his tears are running

From what he must return to

Monday said nothing

Like it never even happened

A cruel test, that he aced

Yet still mourned the fail

(There was no one to grade him)

So he just kept digging

Captain said to beat the rain

He wondered if they could

All he wanted was another flame

And his drum
