The Murder of Edmond SafraA Chapter by CJEdmond Safra was born in Lebanon in 1932. By his 60s, he was a well-known banker, considered one of the world’s wealthiest and most influential bankers. So when the news of his death got out, the world was shocked. His penthouse had been burned, but no one knew who had done it. Investigators looked first at Ted Maher, one of Safra’s nurses, who had been there that night and survived. According to Maher, he had been taken off the streets before that night and was told to make sure one of the bulletproof blinds was open. The people who took him came into the penthouse, and when Maher tried to fight them off, he was stabbed. Safra and Torrente, the other nurse that night, were told to go into the panic room to be safe. When the penthouse went up in flames, both Safra and Torrente died from smoke inhalation. The reasoning for Maher being suspected of murder was that he had lit a fire in the wastebasket in hopes that it would trigger the fire alarm and help would come. Authorities said that Maher had staged the break-in, hoping that he would be able to become the hero and secure his position on the staff. There is one curious thing about this statement, though. Just a few days before, Maher had asked if his family could stay with him in Monaco. Why would someone ask that, only to commit murder? Most people who kill have a motive. So let’s look at the wife of Edmond Safra. No one suspected it might be her; it was never looked into. It is quite suspicious that her previous husbands had died under curious circumstances. One of them, for example, was shot twice in the chest, and it was ruled a suicide. We know that Maher lit a fire in the wastebasket; that was never denied. But what if we entertained the idea that the wife had a part to play? Maybe Maher is more innocent than the authorities thought. At any rate, Maher got sentenced to 10 years in prison. After a month, he had attempted to escape, but was soon caught in France. After getting out in October of 2007, he changed his name to Jon Green, hoping to get a new start. He ended up back in jail in 2022 and has remained there since, after being found guilty of two counts of forgery, later also charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder. No one truly knows what happened in the penthouse that night. Maybe no one ever will. Maher still tries to convince the general public that he is not guilty of this crime. Was it the wife? Is Maher really the murderer of two innocent people? We may never find out. © 2026 CJ |
