Somewhere along this long and winding road,
many of us were taught that to give is to plant, that to love is to secure, that to sacrifice is to build a future where hands will one day reach back for ours... Self-sacrifice without self-preservation... is merely an act of emptying yourself... We are taught that to give until it hurts is noble. We are told to pour ourselves out, to build bridges with our own bones, hoping that when we need to cross, someone will be there to catch us... But life… life does not always honor that perceived context... You may look at your endless generosity as a deep investment, planting seeds of kindness in the hearts of others, expecting a harvest of loyalty when the winter of your life arrives...But your entourage rarely acts in transaction. What you call a "seed," others perceive it as a disposable gesture... You can pour yourself into others" again and again, until your name becomes a synonym for “there when needed.” You can empty your pockets, your time, your spirit, believing you are sowing something for the end of your journey... They appreciate it in the moment. They take the warmth, but they do not take the burden... It is the the painful, shattering realization that comes to many at the edge of their existence is that kindness is not a currency that guarantees loyalty...to them, it may have only been a moment... You may one day stand in your time of need, exhausted, depleted, empty, and look around, only to find that the people you helped are not there to return the favor... They are not villains. They are simply human. People move, they evolve, and they live according to their own capacities, their own limitations. Not everyone loves with your depth. Not everyone gives with your ferocity... You may look around for the echoes of all you gave… …and find silence...absence... Your goodness was never a contract. Your sacrifices were never guarantees. Your love, though real, though powerful, was never insurance... If you build your life entirely as a scaffolding for others, without securing your own foundation, your own finances, your own physical and emotional well-being, you risk total collapse when you need support the most... Do not wait until a crisis to realize you neglected yourself... Devotion is noble. Love is grand. But you must never, never, neglect the vessel. Your generosity must not be a form of self-erasure... Love... but with awareness, not blind expectation. Help others... but build a life where you are also secure. Be kind... but be guarded... Do not build your life on the expectation that others will one day repay your favors... Build it so that even if no one comes, you still stand... Live a life of purpose that includes serving, giving, yes, but never, ever at the expense of your own foundational stability... Be the one who knows how to give, who gives with an open heart, but who has learned how to stand tall, even when no one will be there to catch you... Live with a mind that discerns. Live with open hands, but rooted feet. Live with love, but not blindness... Guard your time. Build your foundation, emotional, physical, financial... out of preparation for your golden days... Do not wait for the end to discover you built no shelter for yourself... The noblest life is not one that burns entirely for others and turns to ash unnoticed... No. It is one that shines, warms, gives light… and still endures the night... Carl Nicolas. © 2026 Carl R Nicolas |
