A Surgeon's Hand Always Shakes Before The First Cut

A Surgeon's Hand Always Shakes Before The First Cut

A Poem by Jerome

There are some who do not know what lies within
their days go by to the tunes and melodies of someone else’s heartache
but there are those who know what lies within
the monsters that hide beneath the bladder and in-between each rib
they speak, softly and calmly
waiting for your weakest moment before they shout
Like surgeons, there are some who cut deep inside and find the monsters
listen to the sad lyrics of their haunting melodies
transcribe them to napkins and scraps of paper
they call them writers
but we call ourselves surgeons
because we cut deep inside,
some look for answers,
some look for feelings,
some look for comfort
But a surgeon cannot be a surgeon without the sick
and so the best of us spend our lives scooping out the voices of monsters and angels
and the worst of us submit to them
