Jazz is KingA Poem by Carl
Cigarettes
Candle light Anticipation’s In the air tonight With stories to tell And with songs to sing And everyone knowing That Jazz is King The orchestra sounds Sultry and smooth As the room’s filled With the sweetest jazz groove Each musician Has something to bring Beautifully crafted Because Jazz is King The songs that I sing I sing from the heart Ella and Sarah Is a fine place to start And each song that I do Has that familiar ring Woven and weaved Because Jazz is King The broken heart That’s failing to mend The letter she’s written But will never send The deepest cut The subtlest sting The rooms rapt attention When Jazz is King I’ve screamed that I love him And whispered she’s gone And told the world That I can’t carry on Found myself on the floor Not knowing where to begin That’s when he held me Because Jazz is King I love this place And I love this town With its stylish suits And its evening gowns The smiles and applause Makes my spirit sing Confirming my belief That Jazz is King There’s Billie in the rafters And Louis by the door Charlie and Duke Listen to the encore Standing here in this place As the ghosts listen in A bygone age When Jazz truly was King Ella and Sarah Really oozed class Alone in the bar I now raise a glass And tomorrow night When the house lights dim We’ll proclaim to another town That Jazz is King
