4. Footnotes  - Nos. & Chapter   --   So, whatever happened to…??

(For added interest, I’ve included a few website link references)

1   Memoirs     The company Smithfield Mall Pty Ltd, according to a Sun-Herald newspaper article on 26th August 1984, was liquidated earlier that month, owing almost $AUD14 million.
The company was registered in 1972 and owned by Garry Dent, and the Company Director was Michael Williams.
(Garry once mentioned me, that due to an earlier court case he was banned from being the company director himself.)

2   Memoirs      Garry Dent died in May 2017, aged 80.
Garry Dent and Gerry Harvey had been old friends for 50 years.
Garry had solved a problem for Mr Harvey (a major Australian retailer) in 2001 when poor car park access to a Harvey Norman store at Penrith was causing the business to lose money. Garry with his property development expertise became a contractor for the Harvey Norman group of companies for 15 years until his unexpected death in 2017 which then caused a housing problem for his de facto widow..

3   Memoirs    All fixed wing aircraft with at least 2 seats side-by-side or in tandem, have dual control columns and can be piloted from either seat.
With side-by-side seating the left-hand seat is designated as the captain's seat.

4  Memoirs   Flight Safety International is no longer involved in MU-2 pilot training, this now being done by the Simcom Aviation Training Center in Orlando Florida.

5   Memoirs    Sadly Bill Kelly died from pancreatic cancer in Oct. 2002, aged only 74.
After our MU-2 Pacific crossing Bill Kelly and I kept in touch by mail and later by internet. Some years later Bill made one more Pacific crossing to the East coast of Australia ferrying a much smaller aircraft
from USA to Bankstown Airport (can’t remember what type of aircraft it was).
I was working for JBA Aviation 9  at Bankstown airport as their Chief Pilot at the time, when Bill totally surprised me walking through my office door one day!  We had a long chit-chat of aviation things.
It was while writing these memoirs and researching Bill’s flying background that I discovered he had also been one of the finalists in the NASA astronaut space selection program. Wow!!  He made no mention of this to me while he was alive, but I am suitably impressed.

6   Memoirs    During my research I found that the Globe Aero company was voluntarily dissolved in September 2008.   https://florida.intercreditreport.com/company/globe-aero-ltd-incorporated-474618
7   Memoirs    Philip and Donna Waldman owners of Globe Aero, I’m sure would’ve reached retirement age by 2008 and so also retired their company.
By then light aircraft sales globally had dropped and so i imagine it would have been difficult to sell it as a going concern.

8  Memoirs      MU-2 Crash in the Pacific 300+ nm off the coast of Cairns (Australia) in 1988

9  Footnotes   JBA Aviation no longer exists, this happens with most general aviation companies, as they are frequently run on very tight budgets. On reflection come to think of it, every general aviation company I’ve ever done flying work for, no longer exists.
About a couple of years before my employment with the new owners of JBA Aviation Flying School and Charter company, it was owned by Australian racing car driver Jack Brabham, hence the initials JB.
I did meet Jack once when he came back to his previous aviation company to pick-up his old sofa lounge from my office. Jack's only conversation with me was that he came to retrieve his sofa. ...He didn't even bother to say hello !!

Thank you for taking me along on this recalling of your aviation career. I enjoyed reading about all aspects of it. I've done a few things in life that will never wash out, and I'm pretty sure your days of flying is like that. It was no easy thing--it often required hard work and courage, but the payoff was great pride, sense of accomplishment, and plain ol' joy.
