Books in limbo

Books in limbo

A Poem by Coyote Poetry
"

I went to the library. I requested two books. Jack London "When God laugh" and Any book written by John Dryden. I was told. Neither book in the metro Detroit area. I thoughts this was a disappointmen

"
                                 Books in limbo
“Beware the fury of a patient man.”
John Dryden
“I'm a little wounded, but I am not slain; I will lay me down to bleed a while. Then I'll rise and fight again.”
John Dryden
Love is love's reward.”
John Dryden
“Dancing is the poetry of the foot.”
John Dryden
But dying is a pleasure / When living is a pain.”
John Dryden

There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive.

Limited minds can recognize limitations only in others.

                      Jack London

“I write for no other purpose than to add to the beauty that now belongs to me. I write a book for no other reason than to add three or four hundred acres to my magnificent estate.”

 Jack London

I do tell the young writers. Write and write some more. Write for god, write for the ancient ones gone. Write for the warm Spring days. Write for love and write for sadness. Write names of people lost on paper and tell their story.  Please don't forget the ancient writers. The first word-men and women laid the ground for us. Write and write some more. Tell of great victories and defeat. Write words describing love, dance and sweet kisses. The words need to be spread. If no-one speak of love and peace. The kind and sweet words can be forgotten. Please write my friend. Write from the heart and the soul. If we never had cried or laughs? Have we lived.

                                   Katie

Kiss me katie. Not once but twice by the light of the moon.

Sweet Katies please dance for me by the lights of the gentle candles.

Make me know what beauty can be.

Show me love is true and tender.

Kiss me katie. Kiss me twice. Lets me know I'm alive.

In your embrace I want to live and die.

Coyote Poetry
We must teach our children to read the ancient writers. We can allow the schools to dumb-down our kids.

This was inspirational, and I always tell something similar to those that approach me for advice (other young writers). I don't believe we should teach children to read anything. We should teach them to find the writer that connects with them, makes them cringe and cry and laugh and weep with happiness. I used to detest writing and poetry and stories because I was force fed Shakespeare and various other writers that did not speak to me. 'Twas when I discovered the devastated Petrarch, the descriptive Luis De Gongora, the drunken rambling of Bukowski, the candor of Wurtzel's prose, and the heartbreaking reveries of Sylvia Plath that I fell into such a deep love with words.

The ancient Poets can teach us about life and passion. Than you David for reading and the comment.
How come I haven't encountered any of London's writings or of Dryden's? They seem to be great writers based on the excerpts you've shared. I need to check them out. I can't miss such excellence.

I agree with your sentiments, John. Thought-provoking piece.

Inspirational words from Jack London n you as well. I write because I love to tell stories. Words flow from my heart to my pen. Thank you for reminding me why I write, for a short while I was lost. Asking myself that very question as I was delayed for a bit. Now my heart is free. Let the words flow again :)

One of my mentors practically forced me to read the classics. Heated discussions and personal introspections later, I am glad he did.

You were lucky. We can learn from the classic. Thank you for reading and the comment.
I agree in a lot of regards with this. My sister was studying Shakespeare in high school a few years ago and she read the originally worded piece while the rest of her class read this modernly worded piece of dribble. I think, though, to help kids understand it they can use those types of things to HELP supplement discussion. Because let's face it - Shakespeare and old lit just isn't for everyone and some people need extra assistance understanding it. But I do think there needs to be more of a focus on older more thought provoking pieces like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Grapes of Wrath, and many many more (those are just a few things that I read in school).

I love the classics ! I am a huge Tolkien, Mark Twain, Jonathon Swift and Jane Austen fan ! I also enjoy many contemporary writers too. But I agree with you that the wisdom and pleasure of the "old books" is becoming obsolete. I was fortunate to have parents who read to me and develop my thirst for literature. Not everyone has that. Good to see someone fighting a worthy cause :)

You were lucky. Reading allow us to travel and learn. Thank you for reading and the comment.
I can definitely understand this feeling! Everyone in the classroom is reading the newest bestselling teen novel and I'm just curled up in my seat with a stack of classical lit. Older books are interesting and thought provoking. It makes us laugh and cry and understand a lot more a lot about life. It's just that the newer generation doesn't really appreciate it anymore :(
