The loveliest girl in Monterey

The loveliest gal in Monterey,

she hated love and disliked men who begged for attention.

I was the midnight poet and I would go to her shop in the mini-mall.

I would bring coffee and sandwiches for her.

I would read my poetry to her and she would ask me.

You are my only friend in Monterey,

you make me talk and laugh.

Why do you waste time with someone who hate everything but the sea?

I told her, we are more-like than you know.

People, tell me, why mess with this mean lady?

I told them, you were not so mean,

you are just seeking the things you need.

I use to love, love. Today I love the falling Sun colors and

the rising moon sky artwork.

You and I had drink coffee on the Monterey pier almost every night,

we shared embrace and some tequila and lemon on Friday and Saturday nights.

We love the sea and we are not tempted to love no-more.

I know you are the prettiest girl in Monterey and I love your artwork,

your search for beauty and when you dance bare-a*s at Big Sur.

I love to hear your midnight song and you are willing to listen to my words.

She smiled and she laughed, she whispered.

I hate desperate men and men, who do not listen to my words.

You make me smile, you tell me the truth about my work and

you look inside my eyes and see a real person,

not just flesh and bones to use-up.

Let’s buy the good tequila tonight and some lime instead of lemon.

Maybe the big storm will get quiet and you and I, can dance for the midnight moon.

I agreed and the loveliest gal in Monterey and I.

Roamed to the Monterey Bay,

star watching and dreaming of things to be.

"she hated love"...that would be a deal-breaker for me. Although I've had more than a few good lady friends. I can understand her hating desperate men. I think it's nearly impossible to love needy people of either sex. I've always admired independent and free-spirited women. But it's been my personal experience that when a woman says things like, "I don't need a man" or "I don't have time for relationships" what they are really doing is issuing a challenge and offering an opportunity for you to change their minds. I think what she really hated was insincerity rather than love. I mean, love is the best thing there is, not sex or romance but love. Love is the ultimate sacrifice of self for those we care about. It was so at the cross on Calvary and I'm fairly certain it's still true today. When we love someone without motives...without wanting or expecting anything in return and we care more about their happiness than our own (a parent-child relationship comes to mind) then we find the purest form of beauty that exists in life and most likely, in the universe. I've always said, love is hard work, responsibility and sacrifice. But you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who wanted to "fall" in that. But alas, I wax philosophical in my review when I should probably just say I thought your poem was beautiful. Thank you for sharing your poetry. I enjoyed the read. Bless, F.

an interesting poem on a relationship, & an enjoyable read.
i particularly like these lines...
"I told them, you were not so mean,
you are just seeking the things you need."
she didn't need the typical groping man preoccupied with his genitals, & only interested in using her body & not interested in her as a person but she did enjoy her midnight poet's company, a sort of meeting of two minds.

Thank you Robert. I appreciate the comment.
You never fail to amaze me with your striking imagination. This is such a romantic piece even though it does not show the story of two lovers but of two people who share a special bond, who listen to each others passion.
"Today I love the falling Sun colors and the rising moon sky artwork." I just love this line.
Beautiful.

I agree with barleygirl; this is one of your best. I keep coming back to read your poetry over the years because you're a sincere storyteller who shares honest and folk-like experiences, with great respect to your settings. I appreciate the formatting of this poem; the line breaks help me read with a rhythm.

I am also in love with several of your lines:

"I use to love, love. Today I love the falling Sun colors and
the rising moon sky artwork."

"I hate desperate men and men, who do not listen to my words.
You make me smile, you tell me the truth about my work and
you look inside my eyes and see a real person,
not just flesh and bones to use-up."

This is one of your best! The reason I love this one so much is becuz you tell it like a story & you include a ton of details that help us know & feel what was passing between you two. I love your honesty & your depiction of her pushing men away, but pulling you in -- that says a lot! That's a big "show" as well as strong storytelling. Since I just finished writing a book, immersed in the Monterey coast life (imaginary) for 2 months straight, I couldn't wait to click on your title, to see how you interpreted this area we both love (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Thank you dear Margie. I saw Monterey in May 2018 and I hope to visit again.
This slices so finely down to the truth of love. Being able to see those we find the loveliest for who they truly are. I loved the line about buying lime instead of lemon to go with the tequila. Such subtlety. Beautiful.

Thank you my friend for reading. Sometime we need less. The sea and a kind voice.
It's weird, but sometimes NOT love IS love. Sometimes two people just like each other. There's no explanation for it, it just is. You seem to fill a void in each others life that had gone missing long ago.
I love this.
There are a few grammatical errors, but you can find them fix them up quickly.
Ha, who am I to say. I am king of errors...all sorts.

Thank you my friend. I write free-style and I will edit. I appreciate the comment.
I not only like this poem, I love the subject of this poem...more vulnerable than she would like to admit.
And she obviously felt something for you, since you didn't need love or need her but just hung out with her, no ties, no pleas...
But there was something special there.
I guess I am one of those who always loved the challenge. When it was someone I though unattainable, I immediately made a pact with myself...the need to succeed with this person one way or another.
Maybe we all just can't resist the challenge every so often.
wickedly interesting piece, Coyote.
