Happy Mother day. Woman bare the glory and honor of protecting their children. Look into a eyes of a woman. You can learn a million stories of what life is.

         A  mother tears

She was a beauty.

My mother was 5 foot 8 inches in height.

She was a  slim young lady with dreams and hope.

She didn't listen to her parent.

She marry a man with rage and hate as his strength.

No-one would hear her cries or scream for help.

No-one would see the bruises and mental abuse given.

My step-father rarely hit her where the bruises could be seen.

He has a smile and good nature till he drank and hated everyone.

Step-father blamed the world for his screw-up life.

He told me he never had a fair chance.

His anger could not be controlled.

Wars and life left him pissed off and hateful.

I remember trying to help my mother.

I was 4 or 5 years old and try to separate and protect her.

He tossed me across the room.

She would try to fight back.

I could hear her cries as he hit her.

He was too powerful.

I was afraid even as a child he would kill her.

One evening a 23 year woman with two kids boarded

a Greyhound bus and they went to New Mexico.

She hid there doing waitress work for cash money.

We didn't come back to Michigan for years.

Step-father marry again and abused  more woman.

I learn never to hit a woman the hard way.

Back then woman didn't have safe houses.

Today I pray we don't allow fear and abuse to be hidden.

Woman and children need safe houses and protection.

Happy Mother day to my wonderful mother. She kept herself strong and positive throughout the years. We need to be thankful for someone who would risk their life so their kids could have a fair chance.

A very deep and painful write. There are so many people with a story like yours that hold it within and do not have the courage to talk about it and get help for the buried feelings they have stored. Yes, they have shelters now, where I worked in one were 18 t-shirts with a picture of the wife who did not live through their spouses abuse. Valentine

This is so inspirational and sad, thank you for sharing your story. Your mother was a strong woman, and this is a great tribute to her to showcase her strength.

How I am intrigued by the realistic images used to accompany your pieces.... 'My stepfather rarely hit her where the bruises could be seen'... If one looks, really looks and one hears...really hears....he/she can observe a battered woman... This speaks for mothers/ woman everywhere...universally... You speak of a mother who would risk her life for her children...most of us would, for tis a reflex of love between mother and child, rarely broken... Bittersweet dedication, my friend.

This just makes me think of the abuse my mother had to endure because she had me! My father was the same way, abuse and angry, but she escaped him as well and is now with a great man that I am proud to call my step-father!

this is a powerful testimony to the damage that is done to a child's psyche, by watching helplessly as their loved parents are abused. gritty and realistic, this is a very compelling and brutally honest poem which gives credence to a subject ignored largely by society until recent years, as you stated. great write!

Very good poem. Unfortunately so many people can relate to this, including myself. My mother packed everything she could on my stroller and walked for miles to a pay phone. Luckily she found my "step father" (who i consider my real father). Thank you for a great poem.
