HeadstoneA Story by Centipedle“This is a Graveyard?” I asked as we walked into the small plot of land. It didn’t have many gravestones, but it was enough to be that of a family I supposed. I watched as Quelt set a bundle of flowers in front of one of the graves. She pressed her hands together as I stood next to her. “I requested my families bodies be moved from a lot of places, this is Satoru’s grave - one of my brothers I was close to.” Quelt told me as she looked towards me. I set my hand over Matthias’ hilt, being a little uncomfortable. I didn’t know what it was about graveyards. I did understand how for someone like Quelt, how hard it would be to keep your families bodies. Quelt’s life was ravaged by war on worlds - her home planets died at least twice. It’s a miracle she could even get bones here. “How did Satoru die?” I asked as I crouched next to her. Despite all this the woman stayed relatively calm. The deity of truth looked over at the white flowers she had placed on the headstone. “Funny thing. Antonio’s son Romeo killed him. Right in front of me.” She said I blinked for a moment. Antonio’s son? Wasn’t he close to Quelt’s daughter at the moment? “It wasn’t his fault, he was really young and it’s easy to take control if you’re the right species.” She smiled towards me. “What about the rest of those who are here?” I asked a little looking around. “One of them was my mothers grave, but I did that because of my sense of humor.” Quelt giggled as she placed a hand over her mouth. Her mother had been brought back from the dead, and so for a time her mother who had been a legacy had a grave no doubt. “Ummm, various brothers and sisters I was able to get my hands on, even if we didn’t know each other they deserved this. Some of them I don’t know their names by heart. My uncle is here as well who helped me run my mother’s kingdom.” She scratched her cheek. “I didn’t think about that, my family was never found after my home planet died.” I crossed my arms. Humming a bit. “Why did you bring me here anyway?” “Because you would’ve run off if I didn’t.” Quelt mused nonchalantly as I coughed on air. “You can’t fool me, you’re trying to run away again because you’re afraid.” I watched the diety as she turned to look me in the eye. “You can’t overcome your fears unless you face them head on. Don’t be afraid of death.” Quelt stood as I was choking on words. Standing up I felt matthias shift to his human form and stand next to me. Quelt looked at the taller man. “Is there something you want to say to me?” she asked. “No Ma’m.” He responded as I looked at him. Quelt laughed, placing a hand over her mouth for a moment. “You can’t lie to a deity of truth Matthias. I can’t even lie.” she said as the young man kept his smile on his face. “I was just thinking, why do you care so much about what Shoe does?” I tensed for a moment as Quelt looked towards me and then back towards my sword partner. “Well, I would tell you in full if I knew. I do know that I really care for her though, she’s like a sister to me.” Quelt raised her index finger. “For her own health I’d suggest you take her home for a few weeks. Maybe talk with Karrina, you know Shoe - you’re a leader and never doubt yourself on that much. Though, you’re always welcome here. Just let me see Sonnie sometime okay.” her head tilted as I felt my face blush a bright red. The head raising as Matthias let out a soft giggle. Damn that deity.© 2016 CentipedleAuthor's Note
