Dragon's nest

Dragon's nest

A Story by Centipedle

"Be careful there Pidge." Kurt advised as she sat against the tree's branch. Why were they here in the first place? That was right they had come across a dragons nest. One of the chicks had gotten out and Pidge was trying to put it back. Considering the creatures were so rare as Kurt watched Pidge climbing she was filled with some sort of anxiety. After all if the parents showed up they could easily attack. Nests were rare since many raised their young as humans for the most part.

Kurt was on a lower branch just below Pidge as she held onto the young white dragon chick. It was yelling in her arms as were the two other siblings. Probably missing their brother. Kurt pressed her hand into the bark of the tree as she watched the rather short girl move up to the nest to put the dragon back. Pidge sure was adventurous, but Kurt supposed it was important that the baby got back into its nest. With them being a dying breed and all as well.

Kurt watched so carefully as she put herself on edge. Something did go wrong as usual, with Pidge her foot was placed wrong slipping off the branch after putting the hatchling back. Kurt cursed as she didn’t even think about it, jumping out to catch the other girl as they both tumbled to the ground. Kurt broke her fall, landing on her back with Pidge on top of her ribs as she felt the air escape her. For a moment it was numb, but then pain was flaring up her back as Pidge rolled off of her.

“Kurt I am so sorry! Are you okay?” Pidge moved her hands over Kurt’s face as the disorientated girl looked at her.

“...I’m fine, just a little winded.” Kurt wheezed as she held onto her side and sat up with a soft smile. “That was really cool though don’t you think?” she smiled looking at Pidge. The brown haired girl scooted closer to Kurt.

“You’re kidding me, we saw some baby dragons that’s like one in a lifetime thing. Serious though, are you sure you’re okay let me see.” Pidge furrowed her brows forward as Kurt winced mildly. She nodded her head for a moment.

“I am fine just sore, I’d tell you otherwise. I of course feel like I fell out of a tree.” Kurt tried to stand up. Stretching out her sore body as Pidge followed her. Pidge placed a hand on Kurt’s side and it was warm surprising Kurt a bit as she clenched her teeth through the pain. Sure it hadn’t been much but she didn’t handle pain well.

“We should get you home now, walk over.” Pidge clarified as Kurt laughed a little bit starting to walk to lead Pidge back to the mansion.

“Short walk?” Kurt tried to tease her friend as they reached the house within no time. The white accents shining in the sun as usual. Kurt entered and looked at her scattered papers to the left before heading to the huge living room and simply sitting on the couch as Pidge sat next to her. “Well what a way to spend my day off I guess.” Kurt smirked as Pidge nodded her head and hugged her knees to her chest.

“I’m glad you're okay at least.” Pidge said as they both stared at the mounted tv on the wall. It was a good awkward few minutes before Kurt spoke.

“Right, I’ll go make us some food. You have to be back at your mentor’s before two pm. So that leaves us two hours. Food and maybe a movie.” Kurt suggested as she leaned forward.

“You trying to fatten me up?” Pidge questioned her.

“I’ve known you for a month and you assume I’m trying to fatten you up?” Kurt asked before smiling. “Yes, I am because the two of us eat like starving hyena’s or not at all.” she quickly flicked Pidge on the nose lightly. “If I eat you eat, and if you eat I end up eating. It’s a good thing.” The shifter stood up and headed into the kitchen as Pidge smiled sitting on the couch.

This is brilliantly written. The best thing is the way you blend make-believe with the most true-to-life details. I'm rarely impressed or taken in by make-believe, but most of your story is so incredibly realistic, it almost makes me believe in dragons. The entire vignette is well-done with a nice balance of description, dialogue, & action thru-out. Your character development truly sings for such a short piece. I love that nothing sounds cliché at all -- very original.

i like the slow introductions to Pidge and Kurt in both your stories of them ... the idea of dragons raising their young as humans is unique and intriguing to me .. i am not so good at it ; but there is always editing isn't there ;) i will watch for more on these two :))
