The Sugar BusA Poem by Fabian G. FranklinJuvenile DiabetesIn every house around the town, everyone waited for the Sugar Bus. It carried the needs of every citizen; it dropped them off, it picked them up. The Sugar Bus ran any time of day and right to the door of the people. Everyone was happy in the town and bells rang in the old church steeple. Young Billy Brown was known around town but hadn't been seen in awhile Everyone wondered what became of him; everyone missed his smile. Poor young Billy was feeling strange and he couldn’t sleep at night He was feeling thirsty all the time and he knew this feeling wasn’t right His belly hurt and he felt so tired but brave young Billy somehow got by He didn’t know it at the time And it wasn’t for anything he had done But for Billy who was feeling bad the Sugar Bus had sadly ceased to run The station closed and locked its doors and wouldn’t serve him anymore Billy didn’t know what triggered this fate He felt so weak and began losing weight When from around town there arose a cry and everyone feared dear Billy might die They didn’t want him to leave for heaven when poor young Billy was only eleven So the doctor was called and when he showed up He said, “There’s been no visit from the sugar bus.” and without the bus and with nothing to give he pronounced young Billy might not live. The doctor told the mayor what it all was about and the mayor said, “We’ll start up a brand new route!” “We’ll send a new sugar bus with a forever friend and the name of the bus we’ll call Insulin.” The bus was sent and the friend with a letter And soon our Billy began to feel better His new friend helped him forget all his fears and made him aware he’d always be near He parked at his door with a pad and a pen to fulfill all his orders on the new sugar bus, Insulin
