A Story by Cherrie L Bill

grandma's and childhood

Not quite erect I see her stance whittled down to a “C”. I’m certain this meant pain to her physique but the familiarity of all she is makes me smile. Eighty years and eight and her life made me more than I could have hoped to be.

I at eleven and she my momma’s grandmother stood eye to eye. Five foot two is not tall but her nature overshadowed us all.  If I had set aside my birthday wish for one more year of her soft words and gentle scent that still lingers with me yet today. Her hearty laugh and simple prays is just another layer of the woman I am.

thank you I seem to write about family alot
It's wonderful that you knew her. She sounds a bit like my grandmother, Molly Dickens, who died before I was born. One thing is for sure--women of their generation worked harder than most of us can imagine. No wonder their backs were bent.
