Building tension

I am going to try this tonight. 

I read an article that says you can build tension by making longer sentences and paragraphs(readers tend to breath where the punctuation is). 

So, once you hit the mark where action begins transition to short sentences (the reader will go from holding their breath,waiting for you to tell them to breath, to breathing quickly). I do the latter a lot but I have not put them together for this effect.

Tension can be just as effective with shorter sentences too of some roght

Yes, I like using shorter sentences too.
I did try the above method of going long then at the pivot cutting the sentences short and choppy it does work but I found it to be a lot of work.

Yeah I tried once, it was okay but I found staying focused on the character most likely to crack in a tough spot, was way more effective as well. Panic spreads easy, and one character climbing the walls leads to another reaction and so on

I like to think about the elements of a good campfire ghost story and try to keep those elements in play.

my sentences tend to be quite long ones, I dunno why coz they rarely make sense.. but just for you... I'm gonna post the first chapter of a would be novel I have been juggling with for ages... thanks for the tip.. the iceberg remains to be seen... Have a blessed day..

Sort of like that idea of the axe falling slowly.
Don't know how long you can actually slowly chop someone's head off though.
I'll think on this one.

You seen the size of those axes. You don't want to be carrying them for long. Suppose I could take it on the bus.

Draw a happy face on it's head, slap a raspberry beret on it and no one will give it a second notice. except the bus driver so be sure and buy two tickets

I think so too. I have done both things to set a pace, but I've never worked it for an one, two punch.

I notice sentence length & how it affects me as I'm reading other people's stuff, but I have to admit, I hardly ever pay attention to my own efforts in this area. I think it might work with other kind of writings as well.
you could set the back-drop for the great outdoors then shorten the sentences for your crowning jewel.-- Maybe--
