Right Hook

Right Hook

A Poem by Clint A. Avery, M.B.

I was just another kid gettin beat up in the schoolyard/teachers didnt wanna deal with the bullies, it must have been too hard/ to control them in the classroom on recess and lunch hour/ so when I had the chance I listened to hip-hop to get my power/ to fight back against these bad kids with my words/ too dumb to make a come back, I could beat them with my verbs/ that was the real action, my cuts and bruises would heal/ but what I said to them would stick, now maybe they would feel/what it felt like to be beaten down to the ground and kicked in the dirt/did they even realize how bad their size two shoe could hurt/ see in elementary school I started my first few years in fear every day/ why was it that as a little boy I just couldn't go outside and play/ I was the one kept in the classroom, only thing to do was read books/ but now as I look back, I'm thankful, 'cause I make my words hit harder than anyone could with a right hook/

Words are very powerful indeed & this write was truly splendid. It's so inspiring to those who have dealt with bullying throughout their lives, but we should believe that violence isn't always the answer. Just take a step back & remember who you are and all the things they could never take from you.
