Look who went Downtown ! The Adventures of Jake, Willard and WinstonA Story by CookieThree dogs, wanting to see new things, leave their neighborhood and find adventure downtown.
Back in the neighborhood, just like Winston expected, Jake and Willard were getting restless again. Their last adventure outside the neighborhood had been so exciting that nothing else felt the same. Not chasing cars. Not chasing tennis balls. Not even barking at the mailman.
They wanted another adventure. “Just one more time,” Jake and Willard begged together. “We’ll never ask again!” (If dogs had fingers, they definitely would’ve been crossing them behind their backs.) Winston shook his head. “This is a really bad idea, guys. What if we run into the dog catcher again? We might not get away next time!” “Oh, you worry too much,” Jake said with a wag of his tail. “What could possibly go wrong?” Winston had heard that one before. Still… they were best friends. And best friends stick together. “Okay,” Winston sighed. “One more adventure. But we have to be careful.” The three friends made sure they all had their collars and tags on"just in case they got lost. At noon, they met at the fire hydrant by Jake’s house, ready to explore again. They slipped quietly through the back alley and out of their neighborhood. Willard was shaking with excitement"and because he was a chihuahua. “This is going to be amazing!” he squeaked. “Calm down,” Jake whispered. “We don’t want to get caught.” Soon they reached a part of the city they had never seen before. The buildings were tall with colorful signs. Music played from open doors. People bustled around carrying shopping bags, eating snacks, and hurrying to and fro. Everything felt big and new. They passed a bakery, and the warm smell of bread made their mouths water. Winston reminded them not to steal anything"no matter how good it smelled. Farther down the street, they found a shop with the door propped open. Willard said, “Hey, let’s go in here!” Winston tried to protest, but Willard had already trotted through the door, and Jake followed right behind. Inside was a huge room full of bright toys. They had walked into a pet store! Bags of treats, squeaky toys, fuzzy beds, and giant chew bones were everywhere. A teenage clerk spotted them and laughed. “Well hello there! Did you escape from doggy school?” She gave each of the dogs a bowl of fresh water and"best of all"tiny dog biscuits shaped like stars. “This water tastes funny,” Willard said after slurping. “That’s because you drink too fast,” Jake teased. Winston was relieved. At least the biscuits were safe. And delicious. The three dogs played for a while, chasing squeaky toys and rolling on fluffy beds. But after all that excitement, they realized they had lost track of time. “We have to get back before the kids get home from school!” Winston said. They hurried out of the pet store and raced back toward their neighborhood. But as they turned the last corner" “There he is!” Jake whispered. The dog catcher’s van was parked right up the street. “What do we do?” Willard squeaked. “Just act natural,” Jake said. “We only have to get past the van. Then we can run through the construction site and lose him.” “Easy for you to say,” Winston muttered. The three dogs walked calmly"very calmly"down the opposite side of the street. But the dog catcher saw them anyway. “Hey! You three! Stop right there!” “Run!” Jake barked. They sprinted through an open gate into a construction site. The dog catcher chased them, but slipped and fell into a big pile of soft sand with a loud WHOOMPH! “That was close!” Willard panted. The three dogs dashed home and slipped back into their yards just as the children were getting off the school bus. They were so tired that they curled up in their beds and fell asleep immediately. The next morning, Winston stretched and said, “See? This is why we shouldn’t go wandering off!” Jake and Willard nodded. But Winston wasn’t fooled. He knew another adventure would be coming sooner or later. The End. © 2025 CookieReviews
