CHAPTER THREE

IN THE CAR WITH MOM AND MAPLE; 5:30 am

Now I remember. I was thinking about Alexis. Best pitcher, hitter, fielder"all that fun stuff"on the team. Last year, she got two home runs, which is a huge win for her. Last year, I couldn’t even hit anything more than a lousy double or two. Last year, I couldn’t even pitch a strike? Why? Because the coach wouldn’t let me pitch for four whole games. Those were also the games we lost at.

Last year was just a warm up, a start to my batting glow up. This season alone, I’ve hit five home runs, and even started playing for the grade above me as well as my grade level. I still gotta work on my pop ups though. Can’t ever seem to catch those in the outfield. But, hey, every player has their weaknesses.

Anyway, mom’s car had just reached the school, trying to find parking, when I suddenly spotted Danny, who was on his bike as usual, waving towards mom’s car, mostly at Maple.

I snapped my head to my sister, just in time to see her bubbly expression relax, now dazed as she waved back slowly, mouth slightly open. I snorted and took out my phone. Rule one of being an annoying sister: NEVER miss your chance to take a pic of your sister drooling over some guy, ESPECIALLY when the guy she’s drooling over is your friend.

“Is that Danny I see?” Mom asked, tipping her glasses as if that was gonna help her see him. Spoiler: It only made it harder to see far away. Trust me, I’ve tried on her glasses before.

Mom had just started talking, “Why don’t you girls join him since there's no parking any"”

Poor mom couldn’t even finish; Maple was already out the door, bag halfway open, already making her way to her ‘soulmate’. Just the thought of seeing her all…lovey dovey with one of my friends that i’m close with is just…yuck

I shake my head in disapproval, in sync with my mom, knowing that Danny will be the polite-self he is around Maple. Thankfully, he knows about Maples ‘little’ crush on her and has already told her that he was too old for him"even though he’s clearly not as three years older isn’t that big of a difference.

I wave to my mom and hop outta the car, jogging over to the two. Right away, I glare at Maple and growl, “Stop embarrassing me.” to which she of course stuck her tongue at me. Unfortunately Danny heard my small threat and gave me his knowing look. The kinda look only moms"and apparently Danny Smith"can give me that makes me apologize.

Danny sighed and nodded towards the school, “Come on, Greens. School isn’t gonna wait forever.”
