The Mask 

A Poem by Colton Warr

Tell me, if you could,

What can you hide behind your mask? 

What treacherous thoughts, what eroding emotion. 

I will answer, but only because you ask

I'll tell you, because I can 

A divided family, a questionable love

A decision made to leave a perfect girl 

An innocent mirage that I cannot get out of

I'll tell you, because I can 

New beginnings and abrupt endings 

A phantom haunting my heart and soul

My god, where am I heading? 

I'll tell you, because I can 

Am I the one doing the marooning, or am I being marooned? 

Pushing and pulling at my own pleasure 

Can't you taste my wound? 

I'll tell you, because I can 

I love my family, I hate my true love

Or perhaps did I confuse the two? 

Can't you tell, I am such the wholesome Dove? 

I'll tell you, because I can 

Have I gone too far, should I be caged alone?

I deserve to be by myself 

Forever destined to aimlessly roam  

I'll tell you, because I can 

What damnation awaits me, you politely ask

But perhaps it is you that should decide

Am I the one wearing a Mask?

Colton, I've written a piece with a similar theme, and that is this: I believe we all wear masks at times to get through life unscathed. We can't just open ourselves bare to everyone until it's determined whether to trust or not. I like how you lead each stanza with the line, "I'll tell you, because I can..." Repeating a line in this manner can serve to place emphasis where you wish it to be, to highlight the points that matter to you most in your poem. We all have our masks, interestingly enough whoever, it is what lies beneath them that makes up who we truly are, yet we still wear them. The concept of this poem was really spectacular. There were some parts, however, that didn't seem to flow with the rest of the work; it sort of threw me off regarding the flow of the piece. Overall, well done.

Good question. Really well written poem. I guess, we all have our own masks, some cover more of our face, some cover less. But we all take them off from time to time. Yeah, sometimes we feel more comfortable wearing a mask, sometimes we have to. A really nice write. 100 points from me. Keep it coming.
