The Hour Glass

The Hour Glass

A Poem by Colton Warr
"

Buried beneath the Sand...

"

                                                  The HourGlass

                                          A Poem by Colton Warr

The hourglass haunts as I bleed

The sands, they do slip ever so,

                                        Soft hands attempt to lead,

But, know not where to go,

                                           Stop them from falling,

                                               lights from passing,

                                                The sand calling,

                                                     Amassing,

                                                     Crashing,

                                                 I do try stalling,

                                              And I do try asking,

                                           But the failure is galling,

And the answer is soundly no

                                    These words, sand cannot read,

so falling is the only thing it knows,

Unconscious to the desperation of my need.

I think many of us feel that we are running out of time, especially when we are aged... the clock keeps moving at it's normal pace...but we do not...our pace changes, and it is sometimes frightening....our needs are not ever met....we feel as if everything is falling away...because we can't keep the pace....I like your style',writing, metaphors, quite imaginative and vivid

The clock does, indeed, move at its normal pace as we feel we need to race.....falling away indeed.... read more
Many people feel as if they are running out of time...especially those over 80....time does not slow for them...I like your metaphors with the sand and other vivid images to show us how time passes in different ways..."but the failure is galling"....."So falling (the hourglass) is the only thing it knows" .....lovely writing

Thank you very much for the kind words and for giving this a read!
I always enjoy reading concrete poetry. It's an art form in itself and doesn't get enough recognition. I felt the second part of the poem deeply.

Sadly as the years go by, awareness increases that the sand is moving faster through the hour glass. Time becomes more precious, as does living in the moment, not the past or the future. Make each day count. You express this situation well in your poem.

I love how you captured the journey from realisation to desperation to a form of acceptance, and it’s really cool how the shape of the poem contributes to that feeling!
