Raising of festive spirit

Raising of festive spirit

A Story by Mira
"

Doubt and worry captured Mira’s mind. And what's worse, right before her favorite holiday.

"

Doubts were rare inhabitants in Alvarez's mind. She was always confident in her work: Mira is a professional in her field and is the chief engineer of Rainbow. Doubts are contraindicated for her. She is responsible for the gadgets, and therefore, for the lives of her comrades. She was always confident in her colleagues: together they were an unbreakable team, daily training and numerous missions proved this. Mira's bond with the team was diamond unbreakable. She was always confident in her relationship. …

Elena and Eliza had been together for almost six months. Their relationship was notsecret at all, nevertheless, few people knew about it. For Eliza, love was something sacred, something intimate and more than special. Talking about it with everyone felt like opening of Pandora's box. Elena's reasons were less poetic: She just preferred other topics of conversation. Why talk about relationships and love when you can discuss a recently watched documentary, an interesting scientific theory, or an idea to improve a gadget?

Cohen and Alvarez enjoyed the balance of life. They usually spent all their time together after work. Watching movies and TV shows, taking long evening walks, cooking together, traveling, although rarely, in connection with their line of work. They seemed to live in the very definition of "love."

Doubts were rare inhabitants in Alvarez's mind. Has she always been confident in her relationship... or not?

Has it ever happened to you that when you notice your partner lingering slightly after work or looking around when talking to colleagues, searching with eyes for you in the crowd to quickly turn around, pretending as if no conversations had taken place, you begin to feel as if something is wrong, and the risk of emergence of the cracks in the heart is increasing alarmingly? Elena was more than surprised when she noticed herself in this cruel situation.

Alvarez had never expected such secrecy from Eliza. She knew her passion well, with her dislike of secrets and preference for a direct approach to any issues. In her long night thoughts Elena suggested that Eliza's warm feelings for her might have cooled. It was unpleasant, but the most possible option. Cheating was not even considered and was immediately ruled out. Cohen just couldn't do that.

Night after night, Elena drowned in thoughts of her beloved foxy - that's what she called Eli in the tides of affection - and the imminent collapse of sweet happiness. After all, each and every good thing comes to an end, right?

And yet Elena was still tossing herself around in disbelief. She wrapped herself in a blanket and looked at the sleeping Eliza's hair scattered on the pillow. There was something magical about her red locks. Something wild, something fiery, something that Eliza subdued every morning by doing her braid. Elena sometimes liked to watch this process of fire pacifying.

Elena did not notice how she fell asleep. The dream was vague, molten, and very warm, and calm. There was a house, there was a family, there were a festive dinner and bright lights.

That was no surprise, Alvarez has been thinking a lot about her family lately. She is used to spending Christmas at home in Madrid. Of course, Elena would like to celebrate the holiday with Eliza, but she did not know if it was possible … Cohen doesn’t celebrate Christmas.

Moreover, the spirit of love and celebration has completely died.

Early morning greeted Elena with the smell of... cookies?

Strange. Suddenly. At first, it even seemed to Elena that the smell of sweets was a remnant of a festive dream. But no, it was quite real.

Elena went down to the kitchen. Eliza was fiddling with something, hissing, and whispering something in Gibberish.

"Good morning," Elenacoming up to Cohen from behindput her head on her shoulder, "Are you making cookies?"

"Sort of," Eliza sighed, burying her cheek in her girlfriend's fluffy hair, "But I messed up. Now it’s more of the abomination than cookies."

Elena looked at the tray with the blurred fawns, colorful boxes and Christmas elves.

"Eli, I thought you don't celebrate Christmas…"

"That’s true. But you do celebrate it, right?" Cohen smiled, "I remember you telling me that this is your favorite day of the year. You've been upset lately, so I decided to raise the holiday spirit. It's a pity there was no surprise …"

Elena detached herself from Eliza and looked at the failed cookies again. A silly smile slowly stretched across her face, turned into a giggle, then a giggle turned into a laugh.

"Hey,Eliza, infected with giggles, could barely contain her laughter, "I tried my best! The cookies may look a little crumpled, but they're still delicious, I'm sure!"

"Tell me, Eli," Elena whispered through laughter, pulling her beloved into her arms, "Have you just been preparing a surprise these last few days?"

"I tried, yeah," Eliza giggled, "But, what, did you think I was avoiding from you? That's silly! You know I don't like secrets. I prefer to do things head on."

The kitchen burst into laughter, which slowly turned into kisses. There is very little time left before Christmas, but there is no point in worrying: the spirit of celebration and love will not run away anywhere.
