Matter

Matter

A Poem by Puja
"

It is about how one struggles to understand what matters and what does not. In the process coming up with ways to understand oneself.

"
I matter.
What matters to me?
I fail to understand it somehow.
The connection of a weird path,
the mind has formed it all.
But alas! I open my eyes,
the smudged view craves for caress.
I want to be seen
I guess.
So turn to me to dress,
the images of the world unknown
I'll smear the black paint
around and bring You
in view
I'll do.
Just tell me.
Will I matter then,
or am I the fooled new.

There is a seeming contradiction in this offering. It begins with a strong statement: "I matter." As the poem progresses, however, we see the speaker is actually needy. There is a craving to belong to someone, to be caressed. Nothing wrong with that. However, we see toward the end the need to belong to a particular individual, the desire for whom outweighs self esteem. "Will I matter then?" is the speaker's real question. Let's hope so, although in fact you matter now.

PS: To me, the last line seems somewhat awkward. Could it possibly be reworked?

yes, we often wonder not only what matters to our lives, but whether our lives really matter to anyone else.
well expressed here, and the last line...is a bit awkward in the read, but I like it anyway.

While inhabiting this dense plane, what approaches objective reality may often elude us.
Sometimes, trial-and-error is called for; other times, we just have to take our best shot.
A thoughtful, thought-provoking poem, Puja!
