Dependence

I was aiming for a metaphor that would transcend the old pill bottle form of addiction.

Treatment for addiction
reads the label on the lid,
but the ink has dried before
the man has shot to kill the kid.

The friendly circle set in stone
murmurs spells described in writ,
but damned if they don’t whisper
like they couldn’t give a s**t.
