Sticks and Stones!

A Poem by Dylan Macadham
"

Snippets, in 3 lines ...

"
"Haha, sticks and stones,
they may break my bones, but names
will never hurt me!"
.  .  .
"Courageous maxim!
It's what we'd love to believe,
but to what degree?"

"Sticks and stones ..." -Alexander Kinglake, 1830

Two poems, in traditional Senryu/Haiku format

I loved that it was transformed into something beautiful using an old saying. Due to my age, I will leave you with a lyric from Taylor Swift: "And snakes and stones never broke my bones so you need to calm down, you being too loud!!!"
haha loved this

I love how this poem plays with the classic saying “sticks and stones may break my bones,” but challenges its simplicity. The shift from the upbeat, confident tone of the first part to the more reflective questioning in the second really makes you think about the true impact of words. The reference to Alexander Kinglake adds depth, showing how this idea has been around for a long time, but still feels relevant today. I appreciate the contrast between the traditional Senryu/Haiku format and the modern, deeper take on something we’ve all heard before—it's clever and thought-provoking!

words are sharper, heavy and can definitely hurt, cut and break us. definitely not sticks and stones, haha. this is thought provoking and well expressed, Dylan.

Thanks AH! :)
Defiantly sticks and stones may break bones but words will hurt to the degree you believe them. A fun and thought provoking poem using an old saying. Lovely
