A Poem by Dale Pavolko

Between the hush of snow and our child’s first breath,
I stand in the doorway again.
The same doorway in time from where I once watched you sleep,
years ago, when dawn was a rumor
and your dreaming face held every future.

Tonight the light returns,
not as prophecy but as memory made flesh:
the child born in the same trembling
that once lived between your slow inhale
and the silence I dared not break.

Hands joined,
mine still remember the weight of yours.
A morning when love was the star.
And our hearts, were held in suspense.
We have remained across all the winters since,
and the shadows flee as our sun rises.
The same way they fled that day
when your eyes opened and our world began
