Untitled (Sunset Sonnet)A Poem by Daniel AffsprungI wrote this after saying the first couple words in Walmart. B. Mahoney probably remembers.
The stained-glass horizon throws shades on Earth's surface
Like slow-motion fireworks in feather-soft focus. The songbirds are quiet, but nicely in-tune, And the breeze, with inspection, holds hints of perfume. There's a river, a quiet, meandering stream, That feels gently familiar, as if from a dream; A river resembling a bright, gilded glove To the eyes of a plane humming softly above. As the sun is adjourning his day in the West, One can spy far-off mountains with tall, painted crests. So as day says it's last and most solemn goodbyes, And a brush-stroke of violet streaks low through the skies, The horizon will silently give up the fight, And await an owl's eulogy, buried by night.
