Why now?

Why now?

A Story by Randall
"

This will be from an as yet unwritten short story, to be titled Seven Days to Save Her.

"
I wonder if you were anywhere near me today.
I kept turning and catching a peripheral glimpse of you.
Some would say, that's the past.
I say it's the future.
I can't be sure, it's even you.
Why would you show up now?
It's been years.
I was sure you were gone for good.
I'm happy where I am.
I really don't need to see you.
I don't need you sneaking into my life again.
I'm happy, I'm content.
Should I put out my eye?
Van Gogh would suggest it.
Besides there is no brothel to take my eye to.
You know, that was where I first saw you.
I was sent to save you.
So, I told myself.
Three days turned into seven.
I failed you. I failed myself.
Is that why you showed yourself?
Because you found out I was happy, I was content.
And you weren't.
Van Gogh was right you know.
It wasn't the drink.
It's the failure of me to save you.
Would you be satisfied with just one eye?
One eye for my sanity.
Or would you want both?
For my failure to save you.
