Passions that are ritualized into responding to command, find themselves in a passive relation to life and its issues. It highlights gentleness, expression and a fondness for pleasures. But most of all, it feels loved by a curious account of being a part of the world in which love is justly shared with all.

In Phrygia, in a long standing tradition for the selection of a head of the community, the farmer Gordian came to occupy that position. This was perceived as a victory of plain common sense over the belief in god and the experience of divine intervention. However, King Gordian, in bringing a common view of life to the masses became inextricably knotted into the problem of just authority, decision making and a fair judgement on issues.

Alexander of Macedonia who arrived at the scene undertook what many consider today as being the only possible solution to the knot that arises from the meeting of the mind of man and the perceived mind of God. He cleaved the knot in two.

As an analogy in the human experience today, we find that we have to engage in something similar. This causes the mind to recultivate itself from start. Thereafter we are assailed by a multitude of issues such as the purpose of life, gender, children, society and so forth.

In a family environment such a cleaving of the knot takes place by a separartion between husband and wife. In the workplace, it may be a professional disagreement or in connection with a best friend it may be the end of a friendship.

All such issues, in the ordinary way in which it occurs, carries with it a potency that is equal to the first great act of division and perhaps even equal to the way the male and female came to view themselves as being different. And as the French sometimes say ' Vive la difference.'
