Perhaps that which is most heart wrenching in the encounter between god and man is the way in which this comes to be reflected in the qualities of friendship. This is expressed in many such ways with a friend of the same sex, the opposite, a pet or simply a high regard for a hero somewhere in time and place. It does make the issue relevant and endearingly personal to our daily lives.

 

In the social activities of the world, we regularly encounter instances of such events. A Solzhenitsyn in the Russian gulag who stood up as a lone voice against issues of oppression drew the admiration of many. In such an experience we cultivate an adoration for such qualities ourselves.

 

Frienship, in most instances has its source in the cradle with the friends we encountered naturally and by chance. It is a rare thing to see a frienship that comes to take shape in later life between persons who have come to understand and respect each other as equals. The difference is priceless.

 

Where that friendship takes place across the world, it represents itself virtually as the will of the world. It reorders our relations with our neighbors where we live. We are prepared to forgive the pettiness of our own societies, especially when we view the fact that such a pettiness in our own kind is as much a part of the world in which we found true frienship.

 

In doing so we don't forget the fact that the friendship we found lies in a place notorious for its twists and turns in the course of a life or the events of the world. But we appreciate the fact that its there and maybe ... maybe, if we lost it again, we'll know where to look for it.
