The Song of ImmortalityA Story by DayranTales of the Chariot Driver : II
Perhaps the greatest impulse we feel among the sensations of the eros is the call of the immortal nature of our being. It is probably the first impulse we felt while still living in the wilds and the last call we affirm as we come to rediscover our self. It expresses itself in song and sings of the many aspects of our experiences. It sings in the body and we hear with our ears and know its source in the body.
The songs served a great cause in the minds of the early natives, as it helped to cultivate a body of passions that responded to the proximity of the physical environment. In time, it may be observed to have evolved into a light that guided the minds of man in his activities. We learnt from these and came to construct the knowledge of ourselves and the world and represented this in our scriptures.
Inevitably, in our quest for faith, we are led back to the experience of the light or of the songs. It is a primal sensation in our bodies and today it relates to the way we bring our mind to view and understand our lives.
In these times, it helps us to understand an important aspect of our experiences. The corresponding impulse of death is a sensation that we avoid and dismiss from our attention. There is no purpose served by our dwelling on it, other than to understand the nature of our individual self, born in this life, has a name, has a vocation and plays the role of father and husband. Death separates one lived before from another and helps the individual in the life to create a space for himself as his individual identity.
Man cannot conceive of death or the morbidity of the unknown, much less can we come to understand it. We know that what is born must someday die. Beyond that, the impulse of immortality, by its twin applications and by its own volition brings to us an understanding of the experience and even more to exalt in the process the experience of life.
We feel the immortal everyday and then one day we reach out to handle it and bring it to our understanding. We do it because we are concerned with life and life with us.
