A reviewer is supposed to read the entire work. JayG reads the first 100 words.

Here’s a challenge. Find me a review where he commented in detail on the beginning, middle, and end of a 2000 word story and I’ll re-evaluate my entire opinion of him.

It’s not a matter of how well written it is. It’s that the “Let me tell you a story” approach you’re using can’t work on the page. Look at the opening as a reader must:



• He always wondered what his father was up to in the shed



An unknown “he” of unknown age, living in an unknown country, in an unknown year, wondered what his father did in a shed that could be anywhere.



In short, while you have a mental picture if the scene, the reader has zero context. But, any good book on fiction writing technique can tell you the three things that we must address quickly to prevent that problem.



• at the back of the mansion lied a Victorian one that was run down.



“The mansion?” Who’s? Where? When? Is dad the gardener, the owner, or...? You know. The kid and his dad know. But the one you wrote it for? Not a clue. See the problem?



Minor point: Lied is the past-tense of lie, not lay.



My point is that readers DON’T come to fiction to learn what happened in the life of a fictional character. They want you to make them feel as if it’s happening to THEM, moment-by-moment, And that takes skills and tricks that you were not given in school.



There, the goal was to ready you for the kind of writing employers need: reports, letters, and other nonfiction.



Fiction requires a very different approach, because nothing-else-works.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky wrote a short essay named "Something About Lying" (1873). It's not that long of a read and, despite the extremely "not happy" themes he novelized about his essays and such were something else. I think I would have liked to hang out with the essay version of Fyodor... the novel version, that guy can f**k right off.

I tend to agree. A genius (obviously!), but that type of intellect can sometimes get stuck in a recursive, then infinitely expounding, narrative. Mostly, we read stories, poetry, any narrative really, to feel something and hopefully learn something. We want that to happen before we die.

It's actually tragi-comic that the fossil would lean on tech. I imagine his slack jaw hanging open, like a child awaiting cereal, as he sees what Chatgpt is capable of.

His psyche must be split right down the middle, with half his brain realising how he can use it to cheat and benefit, and the other half truly knowing that his ‘art’ has always been a lie. Zeroes and ones have more emotional, intellectual depth than this man who’s lived a long life. Can you imagine that dagger’s cut?

I shudder at the thought. Pray God I never become so conceited in a delusion.

Still, I haven’t given up hope on old JayG. I’m perfectly willing to give credit if he ever finds the humility to recognise his error.

Jay is caught in a self made fantasy of his own making. At some point in his self publishing (or "self releasing" as he likes to put it) career he got duped by a self publishing sales pitch into thinking he's a "respected writer". It never dawned on him that he was paying for praise. It still hasn't. At his age there is no real chance at the 'changing of the ways'. The cognitive dissonance would be too painful and not worth spending the time he has left on. He's going to ride with the "grumpy writing coach" fantasy until the end. It's nice to see other people give him s**t for this nonsense he's been pulling for well over a decade at this point. He specifically targets new and young writers because he knows they are particularly sensitive to "constructive" criticism. That's where he feels comfortable unleashing his inner bully.

On that point, have you ever noticed that reading anything of the bully's commentary—fiction and non-fiction alike—is nauseating? It’s like he’s the Anti-author, somehow creating narrative which subtracts from the world, makes it duller, greyer, less meaningful.

I also can’t help noticing he’s cringing somewhere in the dark, tail between the legs. He hasn’t the nerve to show up, hasn’t the cojones to take up my challenge.

But what the customers don't know is that person doesn't make their money from trading, they make it from selling courses about how to trade. Oh – that’s right, you don’t have one of those. You don’t even believe in the Big Guy who gives them out. Never mind, it’s not your only disappointing trait.

Secondly. You used a cliché, a stilted truism. Again. Parents! An appeal to authority!!! Maybe you don’t know what that means. You certainly haven’t studied philosophy. Let me just tell you it’s a logical fallacy. ChatGPT it, and you might learn something. Though you’ll forget by the time you have your porridge tomorrow.

Thirdly. I specifically asked you to be original and not use quotes. Cliches are a reference to quote. You weren’t original. You’ve had… days. It’s simply not in you, is it? If an adventure beckoned you with fairy lights along a yellow brick road, you’d close the curtains muttering how you’d go study a better way.

Fourth. Let’s forget about the (ly) of it all, shall we? You didn’t mention Why our parents would be so disappointed. Care to give a reason? Of course not. That would require (a tiny bit) of effort and imagination. You’re lacking there. Perhaps if I was a teenage girl, you might care to rebut. But no, I don’t think so.

Fifth. Why didn’t you just apologise and say you’d stop bullying people? Wouldn’t that be easier?

Sixth. I saw your response two hours ago, watched a football match, had a beer, thought about how I have four days off upcoming, and then wrote back.

There’s more actual human being in this short monologue than you can muster in a month. There’s more originality than 1000 of your reviews. Put any of this through AI detector and you’ll find none. More than that, check any of the unusual phrasing on the whole internet and you won’t find it. It’s called voice. YOU have a craven croak.
