Perhaps a Turning Point

Perhaps a Turning Point

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

All this dark is pulling me apart.

"

All this dark is pulling me apart.
I need someone to save me
Before I fade away.
Maybe it’s her.
Maybe it’s God.
If either is real,
My heart is free to steal.

Voices fading
As they fall asleep.
I draw quiet breaths.
As I walk and weep.
I haven’t cried in years.
I think it’s my only fear.

All this dark is pulling me apart.
I need someone to save me
Before I fade away.
Maybe it’s her.
Maybe it’s God.
If either is real,
My heart is free to steal.

I know what’s written for me.
I know which verse is mine,
Whether played to notes
Or some translated sign
Of the heavens.
Will I see heaven,
Either in the sky
Or in the smile that is thine.

I can tell this song was written by me
Because it’s filled with all this grief.
I once said that a song should mean something-
Something that you feel-
But what can that be when all you feel is nothing.

All this dark is pulling me apart.
I need someone to save me
Before I fade away.
Maybe it’s her.
Maybe it’s God.
If either is real,
My heart is free to steal.

An beautifully written piece. It's like a reflection of my own turmoil that overwhelms me sometimes. I could almost totally relate. What's so great about this site is that we read other people's poetry that can really speak to you, that can say words that sometimes we ourselves haven't been able to fully pen. That's what this poem was to me. Thanks for sharing.
