Jim, you hit a sore spot in me with this one. After my first wife died, I was given a large sealed envelope fat with contents unknown. I was up past midnight, 2 am found me sitting on the sofa weeping, letters scattered on the floor around me. They were love letters written back and forth between Mary Anne and her first husband, who she never told me of. I still have them, stuffed in a bottom drawer, but have never read them since.
