Heartbeat

Heartbeat

A Poem by Alexandra

You lie there,
So still.
Your breath is so shallow,
It’s hard to tell you’re even alive.
Hooked up to a monitor
I watch your heartbeat go by.
Managing to say hello without choking
As you sleep
I glance over to see you smile
Loud beeps shatter the peace and silence
I look up at the monitor again to see just a flat line.
I came just in time to watch you die.
And that final smile…
Well,
I’ve always wondered
If it was from my voice or a dream
