A Long Journey Home

A Long Journey Home

A Poem by Diane Lockard
"

Today, Nov. 11, 2015 - Veteran's Day A tribute to all the men and women who serve our country... After the Civil War, a young Rebel soldier, some in their teens, starts his journey home....

"
“Ma, warm the beans,” hearing a knock on the log cabin door

Standing there, a young man, looking older than his years

Wearing a tattered Rebel uniform; hat in hand

“Any food to spare, sir? ...the road is long.”

"Come in,” indicating a spot at an old wooden table

Woman smiles and sets down a steaming cup of beans

Followed by a small square of corn bread, hot from the oven

A few dots of home-made butter melting on top

"Are you on your journey home?"

Mouth full of beans, he mumbles, "Thank you, ma'am,

It has been a long spell since I seen the I seen the ol' place

My Ma and Pa still there, the last I heard. Sister, too

Probably, has younguns of her own"

“Pa, pour him a cup of water. We will share the provisions

The Good Lord thought to provide us…

It is what I would want someone to do for own son"

Veteran’s Day Nov. 11, 2015 "Many thanks to the men and and women who serve to protect us.."

Your positive feedback is appreciated and I am happy that I could share my poem with you...
This is very touching. Having grown up so poor, I'll never forget how much I appreciated the occasional compassion of strangers. The Civil War setting adds even more to the value of the moment.
