The Silence

The Silence

This place is so peaceful.
I sit down as I look around at all of
the beautiful flowers.
I say a prayer.
I tell you everything that is going on
in my life.
I tell you how nothing has been the
same without you.
Then I sit in silence.
The silence is what is hard for me.
I tell you how much I miss you,
as I start to cry.
It is time for me to go now,
but I will be back next week.
I tell you goodbye Dad.
I get in my car and drive out
of the cemetery with tears in my eyes.

I too lost me dear dad many years ago. He was my rock and my mentor, he was wise.

This is such a heart-wrenching conversation. I’ve never had this experience myself, but you describe it so vividly, it’s as if I’m right there. Altho your poem is about “dad” – it could be anyone of any relationship, even the loss of a pet. I can never visit graves because it gives me severe angst. This was expressed so well and reminds me why I don't visit graves very often. May your loved one rest in peace.
