When Snow is Forecast for the South

By Elton Camp

Snow is now in the forecast for tomorrow

It’s so rare that it brings panic and horror

All wildly run down to the grocery store

As if they would never get there any more

To clerks in the places it must be quite a trial

People crowded with buggies into every aisle

Basic supplies will soon vanish from the shelf

I must admit that I have also done that myself

To hoard up groceries, there is no real need

Pleas from restraint and calm I don’t heed

I reach the place where the bread used to be

And to my shock, not a single loaf do I see

Where the eggs are kept is an empty space

And of containers of milk, there’s no trace

On the chance that electricity should go out

It makes us frantic to buy candles, no doubt

Next day temperatures are cold, sky gray

About to do what the weathermen did say

Glistening flakes of snow then fill the air

I am glad that I took the time to prepare

And those who weren’t as cautious as me

In their homes without enough food will be

The yard is now becoming a blanket of white

I expect it will snow all day and all night

After a while, the blades of grass disappear

The weather is doing just what we did fear

I don’t go out and measure, but it is a cinch

We already must have at least half an inch

The snowfall begins to slow and then stop

Surely the winter storm won’t be a big flop

But it is, and to everyone’s total surprise

Not a single, white flake more of snow flies

The merchants don’t mind and think it funny

As they sit around and count all their money

In a single day, far more business did they do

Than what they usually have in a week or two

You’d think we’d learn, but we never will

Forecast of snow give Southerners a thrill

But the ground will almost always stay bare

There will be little accumulation out there
