Engagements & Scandals

Engagements & Scandals

A Poem by I Am Svetlana

Through the open windows,
I could hear the heart of the woods.
But I was playing with demons
at those all-night dances.
Craving some freedom
in such a devilish city.

Thrust into
engagements & scandals.

I admire the dancing girls.
The ones who wore
ropes of pearls
upon their chests.
It was no river party.

Each morning,
I arise with empty thoughts
of what really happened.

loved everything except for "devilish city". that line has a lot of weight, being at the end of the stanza, and finishing the enjambed line before it. "such a devilish city" doesn't really feel very evocative or interesting, since "demons" were already mentioned. maybe try something more literal, with implications/associations of what you want to describe, or even just a more interesting word. I don't mean to be harsh, I really, really liked the rest of it, and I feel like that's the only bad part, and it stands out, so it's easy to point out.
