Lessa and Tragedy

Lessa and Tragedy

A Poem by I Am Svetlana

The people stop and stare

At this poor girl.

She passes down the street with a swollen face.

Showing her husband's rage.

In life, she had to get out.

Only, she felt stuck.

(Chorus):

No one knows why she stayed

Perhaps the tears told her to.

She held out as long as she could,

But everyone knew she deserved better.

Each night, she would cry herself to sleep.

It was sign that she had to leave.

One day, she did.

But soon after, she came back.

She knew she couldn't let him go.

(chorus)

She spoke to no one as she passed on by.

Her eyes set in focus on the world before her.

Heels tapping the ground, telling a story.

(chorus)

No one knows when they saw him last.

Perhaps he went away and left her alone.

The woman walks that street everyday.

Her heels always telling her story.

(chorus)

It's thought provoking. A sad issue well expressed in verse. Well done!

Domestic violence is not a theme that lends itself well to musicality and harmony, and indeed the discordant rhythm here reflects that. Nonetheless you have captured something of the terror and tragedy, as well as the banal acceptance of society( or its turning of a blind eye) to what's going on quite well. This is different and fresh, original. I liked it!
