My 1st Slam

My 1st Slam

A Poem by Rose Downing
"

When I started slam poetry I didn't really have any free verse poems, so I wrote this one a day or 2 before the event and called it My 1st Slam.

"

I've always been good at poetry,
and far ahead of my years,
but now that I'm competing poetically,
my spirit hiccups in fear.
I HAVE TO KNOW! What's riding on this is an emotional bankroll to choke a hippo!
This is my soul!
Where will I go? Will I be somewhere? I don't know!
I just had to tell someone all of these thoughts and feelings within and sitting there was a paper and pen (how convenient!)
But my easy way out was a path less traveled with dense vegetation of thoughts from the heart, and creatures of writer vulnerability that could tear you apart.
So you better get up, get trucking, get ahead of the pack or else you're a snack,
AND DON'T LOOK BACK!
Because it looks like the easy way out!
