Somewhere to Sleep

Somewhere to Sleep

A Poem by Rachel Harper
"

Inspired by a story from the bible, this poem is about a weary traveler with nowhere to go.

"

I am crippled and I am hurt,

Tonight I will not lie in the dirt.

My body is weightless and my body is weak,

And so I search out for somewhere to sleep.

But as I ask from home to home,

They send me out and I continue to roam.

In the darkness, I give the ultimate test,

A leap of faith for somewhere to rest,

But no one answers and no one welcomes me,

A filthy vagabond with no sense is all they see,

All I cause is great alarm,

Because nobody can see I mean no harm.

I am kind and I will give all I can,

But I can not say the same for my fellow man.

So if I wander to your door,

Would you open up or would you ignore?

Here I am knocking away,

Must you leave me out in the cold awake?

I am not a killer; I am not a thief,

And I understand that I give you no reason for belief.

You are sensible; you just want to stay alive,

But I also seek to thrive.

And my bones are bricks, I must rest,

Or it will be death to be my final guest.

I don’t ask much, just a place to stay,

Please, I beg you, don’t send me away.

Surely, I leave you all my bearings,

You can take anything that I am carrying.

But what you will really get and receive,

Are my all blessings when I leave.

A great piece dealing, in what i can see, with prejudice and acceptance and much more. Enjoyed the poem greatly, but in my opinion, the very poem could be more visually intriguing with a sepetation of verses, thou such a minor tweak do not seem to be anyway a necessary adjustment.

Thanks for writing this enjoyable piece.

Yes, I see the very important Bible message that, even for non-believers, should be embraced and accepted. We all should know that our places could be traded, if it be the will of fortune. Having grown up in poverty, I know the great value of a helping and empathetic heart. Very nice writing, Rachel.
