public square

public square

A Poem by redd Brick Keshner

The square buzzes-

polished shoes clack, briefcases click.

A nod here, a smirk there.

Underneath, a rasp-

small hands searching cobblestones,

eyes scanning for faces that never turned back.

The carousel’s tune plays faint,

a lullaby for someone else.

They brush it off.

A tailored coat settles on shaking shoulders.

The child sits quietly,

hidden inside the polished sheen.

This reminds me very much of my dad and when he would get off the subway coming home from work in the Chrysler Building...and how he would walk across the cobblestones in the park across the street. I would watch from our fifth-story window of our apartment.
Thanks for the reminder...a nice memory.

This reminded me of city life. Dad’s going off to work and children watching them go, hoping for a last wave goodbye, and not getting it. Made me feel sad, the images gave me negative emotions. The too polished shoes speak. Have a good weekend Freds.
