The last place

I go to the last place we knew
By night when seagulls stop screaming
Where the tide also left without a goodbye
Going somewhere beneath a crescent moon
Street lamps shimmer on the evening rain
A thick-legged w***e stands awaiting
Scavenger dogs crouch over restaurant scraps
And past the park where they all walk in twos

 

By instinct I walk to the end of the pier
To watch the water move on itself
Where winds come to me like hollow whispers
“I must go, please, tell me goodnight.”
You never knew how to say goodbye
And I never knew when
While I learn everything I will never know
There in that last place we knew
