Things to change

Things to change

A Poem by DrD

A rain pregnant sky parasols me

Heavy bellied, sagging against the horizon

While sewers gargle dust

And chimneys belch black smoke

Then I remember . . . .

With you it would have all been beautiful.

But the city crouches, taunting

Because we never knew

That somewhere a clock was timing us

And our velvet skies in a world

Where the incandescent sun poured

Onto damp, pine scented woods

And your breasts came wonderfully alive

Beneath my kisses

All was measured by fate’s endurance.

My mind is a time capsule

Containing the generation of you and me.

Permanent upon me, you remain

And I know that if I were the Creator
I would have made you no differently

Than you were.

I would change nothing, add or delete

Nor would I alter a second of us together

From that first moment our naked bodies touched
And a god stepped between us and lightning struck

To that fatal sight

When your mind moved back into your face

And you put on the mask of resolution

And packed a suitcase.

But wait . . . . oh yes, that I would change.

the tone set by those first few lines is exquisite - not necessarily in the "beautiful" sense but in the sheer strength of the imagery presented. A wonderful write.
