words like blistering spikes
speaking in foreign tongues
and thumping on splintered pulpwood

Prying ears quiver to hear
mockery of quaking aspens

i helpless,
as they  hit the mark of hurting me

i wish i had quickened wit and delivery
to say all the things i think of

Ouch Mr E. I felt some thorns digging in to soft flesh here. Words can hurt. So annoying when you can’t fire back with a volley. Later you start to think of all the things you could have said. So relatable. Sending you all good wishes across the pond:)

I feel this poem Einstein it reaches deep. Never glib of tongue as I grow older I find that it takes longer for things to sink in and I often wish that what I thought to say latter I had thought of at the time. Put in such poetic imagery it was most fun to read.

E.
Sticks & stones may break bones but words
hurtful words can break the spirit, & one
oftentimes, cannot respond quickly enough
with a clever retort, untill much later
I like the way you wrote this Mr.E ..
.....nicely rendered...

I listened to the song and the words were stinging....it goes perfectly with your words.. which are hurtful...seems like your writings are not appreciated and you feel that hurt right to your bones...."words like blistering spikes" is that a way to treat someone??? they (whomever) are mocking you....your words are powerful and show us how hurtful ugly words can be.....Well written E....

You seem very wise dear poet and friend; slow to anger, right answer afterwards. It takes discipline when they catch you off guard and lob those insults at you; you must have learned that after coming back from Nam.
An excellent poem with a message.

You are welcome sir.
A sharp riposte always the perfect put down though I guess E, much like me, never easy after some smart a*s has fired the first shot and the mixture of immediate emotion belies that quick retort..

Creatively conveyed!

How true....when someone puts us down, we are often left staring into space without a retort. Later on, we do think of all the great comebacks we could have used. Such is life. Just remember, what others think of you is none of your business! :) Very well written, E. Lydi**
