A Lament

By FlatDaddy

There was something I wanted
   more than anything.
      something I could never achieve.
something so far out of my reach I knew it would never be
mine.

One Thing
   I knew others had
and seemed to come by with ease,
         something more priceless ...
something I tried hard to claim ...

So valuable,

   yet freely given.
Something most have ...
   for a while ... yet
      lose so easily
                                that some never miss it

until it is too late to claim, too late.

Some have it but never appreciate it.
Some appreciate it, but don’t know how to keep it.
Some keep it but never have it.

I had it but lost it.
I had it but it lost me.
I had it but gave it away.
I had it but left it.
I had it but was afraid of it.
I had it but ran away from it.
I had it but it so terrified me

                                                                                         that I killed it.

Once upon a time I had a father who once upon a time had me.

Once upon a time a father had a son who had a father who left a son who left a son who had a father who had a son and a son and a daughter who left her father and never had a son to have or leave anyone.

In the end there is

   no

one

                                left

This one seems to describe a multigenerational family collapse, a description of desertions which had negative effects on many people, so that that family structure no longer exists. It is a situation that may affect many American families now. The last lines are heartbreaking to read.

Thank you, John. Very intuitive.
A happy family? If I could go back to when I was ten, that's what I'd wish for, at least. Perhaps I'm interpreting it all wrong, but that's the one thing that comes to mind.
