Listening

Listening

A Poem by Dominik Drite
"

Imagine hearing the screams of someone you know at night, only to turn around and see that person awake beside you, listening.

"
Don't wake me up.
I'm not dreaming.
I'm awake as hell
and listening.

I can hear them
coming out of
their throats,
cracking open.

Don't listen to me.
I'm not screaming.
I'm quiet as hell,
and listening.

I can hear them,
shrieking mahogany,
breathing heavily,
and approaching.

Don't think about them.
They're not real.
I'm real as hell
and listening.

Waiting.
