In the depths of my mind
It’s a dark and stormy sea.

I wish to leave it all behind
But what would be left of me?

This brief poem raises some interesting philosophical questions. If our inner lives are so unpleasant, why do we stay there so much? Do we fear we will cease to exist if we get rid of our unhappiness? In the case of clinical depression there may not be much choice, but how many of us get a secret payoff from our pain?
